supporting local with a global perspective

Bettina Vollmerhausen photographed in Hintonburg.

What better timing to photograph the vibrant Bettina Vollmerhausen all donned in her self-made knitted wear in front of Wabi Sabi, then a week before Christmas (a time of gift giving and the challenge of finding unique gifts for special people). Bettina is a partner in a very cool online gifting service called SMAKK – a network of independently owned businesses (restaurants, boutiques, artisans, etc) being wonderfully connected to customers globally who are looking for gift ideas. During my conversation after the shoot, I quickly discovered that Bettina’s a serial connector who loves revealing the unique, the independent and presenting the local gems of Ottawa.

When I asked Bettina what some of these local gems were for her, she quickly gravitated more to what she can do with her family in the region. Skiing, cycling, hiking, kayaking – the close access to the outdoors.  She also loves the in-juxtaposition of the cool cultural vibe of the city and the natural environment that’s so close to escape to. Some of Bettina’s in-city Ottawa favourite gems are Zen Kitchen, Happy Goat Coffee and The National Arts Centre.
