“sharing the love”

Ottawa’s full of great people, great places to eat and great stories to share – here’s a few!

all lit up for the holidays!

Ottawa looks great the best of times with all of the beautiful heritage architecture, but it really shines up nice when it’s all lit up for the holidays! :)  If you’re shooting Ottawa imagery and sharing it on Instagram, please tag it with #loveottawa and I’ll do my best to share it via twitter.

great food, cool atmosphere and a room full of respect

I’m no foodie, but I know great food when I taste it – and the food at El Camino on Elgin is beyond great! The tacos are simple, affordable and so delicious (pork, beef, lamb or fish). My non-taco favorites are the salt + pepper squid and the shrimp dumplings. And the tequila and cocktails are second to none in town! But enough about the food and drinks. The place just has this cool vibe. Is it the music or the lighting, the take-out window or the industrial urban atmosphere? Of course all of that comes into play, but in my opinion it’s more than that – for me it’s the respectful dynamic between kitchen, front of the house and the customer that owner Matt Carmichael and manager Andrea Brickell have created. No wonder most of their customers are all dedicated regulars. If you haven’t yet eaten at El Camino, the line up at the door is more than worth the wait!

the heart & crown’s christmas spirit is all heart

Yesterday on Christmas Day I stumbled upon an incredibly awesome Christmas initiative. The Heart & Crown Pub in the market was putting on it’s annual free Christmas lunch for the less fortunate – and the place was full. After asking a few questions of the fellow at the door, Julie from The Heart & Crown took me downstairs into their kitchen so I could take a few snaps of the delicious hot turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables and gravy lunches being prepared. So so humbling! If that wasn’t enough each person for lunch was also invited to take home a Christmas gift! I totally know who I’ll be supporting throughout the year when I want some lunch or a pint when I’m in The Byward Market!

we heart hintonburg

I just got back from an after dinner walk with my son through Hintonburg and I was re-reminded just how much our neighborhood has been changing and evolving. It seems like every time we blink, a new restaurant pops up – tonight it was the newly opened ZaZaZa Pizza (with a huge line up to get in I might add). Hintonburg continues to be the Ottawa neighborhood to continue to keep your eye on and it’s maybe a little difficult to explain why. For me it’s the authenticity of the neighborhood and the locally owned and run feel of the restaurants – not to mention the neighborhood’s inclusiveness of all kinds of people from a variety of economic backgrounds. It’s vibrant, it’s creative, it’s a little sketchy in places (in a good way) and it’s real. And I love living and working here! :)

The eXposed Project is randomly posting envelopes around Ottawa with a free photographic print inside, with the prime intention of giving photography away to  strangers. The project is also shedding light on some very deserving non-profits who are focused on health and social issues facing Ottawa citizens. Odd and quirky perhaps, but fun and effective! :)
