so much great stuff happening just below the surface

Nancy Kenny photographed downtown on the corner of Bank and Gilmour.

It was so great to photograph independent theatre artist Nancy Kenny the other day! Nancy came to Ottawa 15 years ago for school, and now uses Ottawa as a creative base, while she travels her one woman Fringe play called “Roller Derby Saved My Soul” across Canada. As much as Nancy travels she always finds herself pulled back to Ottawa. “Just when I think I’m out, it pulls me back in!” Ottawa’s pull is its supportive creative infrastructure for independent artists including Arts Court with its great performing art and gallery spaces. Arts Court is also home to multiple arts organizations, including The Ottawa Fringe Festival. “Arts Court is currently being managed by some of the nicest, dedicated and most forward thinking people I know.”

When Nancy’s not writing or acting, she loves to go see plays. She loves going to The National Arts Centre or the Great Canadian Theatre Company, but her favourite experiences have always been from the small indie companies in town. “That’s what is so great about Ottawa – there’s so much great stuff happening just below the surface!”

Nancy loves seeing how Ottawa is evolving from a primarily focused government town into a hip entrepreneurial community. “There’s a real sense of sharing and community building here in Ottawa. You see it in organizations like HUB Ottawa, of which I recently became a member.”  HUB is a great resource for people who are self-employed – a place to write independently or meet with clients or colleagues. Nancy is also a big fan of writing in the local cafés in Ottawa, places like Bridgehead,  Grounded Kitchen & Coffeehouse and Backdrop on Metcalfe.

Something that’s quite cool and so in the spirit of Ottawa’s entrepreneurial nature, Nancy is crowd-sourcing the financing for a film documentary – recording her 4 month cross Canada Fringe Festival tour. She will be also presenting her play “Roller Derby Saved My Soul” one night on May 30th at Arts Court Theatre, as a launching point for her tour. I just love Ottawa’s creative entrepreneurs!
